In a word, no. You don’t need meditation cushions to meditate but if you talk to those who practice on a regular basis they will protest that it is a necessity. I’m personally fine with the floor, a kitchen chair, or the bed but that’s just me.
The reality is you can meditate on almost any surface, bench or chair and it is really just a personal preference.
Now if you are one of those people who need or prefer meditation cushions then you are not alone. Lot’s of people swear by them so of course there is a huge market full of cushions to choose from. There are many difference styles, colors, and fabrics to choose from. I have linked to a few meditation cushions in my Amazon store below but your options are just about limitless.
Some of the most popular styles of them are the basic circles or rectangles; however, the half circles/moon shapes are becoming quite popular as well. Along with the rectangle shaped cushions, there are also square cushions. In all those shapes, they are all available in different sizes.
Most cushions are made of a cotton or wool. That being said there is a new breed where many they are now being made of is buckwheat hull. When it comes to buckwheat hull, it is known to be sturdy but yet comfortable enough to give proper support while feeling as if you were sitting in sand.
So the bottom line is cushions, pillows, benches, etc... are plentiful and handy for those who like them. Pick something that you like and is comfortable to you. It doesn’t matter if it is an official meditation product or an overstuffed teddy bear. Just pick something you like and keep on meditating.
